Viking Dishwasher Wash Water Temperature Sensor Fault

Viking dishwashers use a water temperature sensor (NTC thermistor) to monitor wash water temperature throughout the cycle. The control board uses this sensor reading to determine when the water has reached the correct temperature to proceed through wash, rinse, and sanitize phases. A failed temperature sensor sends an incorrect reading to the control board — either causing the cycle to stall at the heating phase (sensor reads cold when water is hot) or to skip heating (sensor reads hot when water is cold). Temperature sensor failure can cause inadequate cleaning, poor sanitization, and cycle interruptions. The sensor is typically located in the sump area of the dishwasher.

Root Causes

What Causes the Wash Water Temperature Sensor Fault Error?

NTC Thermistor Element Failure

The negative temperature coefficient thermistor element has drifted out of specification or failed, sending incorrect temperature values to the control board.

Sensor Wiring Connector Corrosion

Moisture and detergent in the dishwasher environment can corrode the sensor connector over time, breaking the signal circuit.

Troubleshooting Steps

Basic Steps Before Calling a Technician

Safety first: Always disconnect power before inspecting your Dishwasher. Do not attempt repairs beyond your skill level.
  1. 01
    Check for Error Code Display

Viking dishwashers may display a specific error code for temperature sensor faults. Note the exact code and contact us — the code identifies the specific sensor circuit that has failed.

  2. 02
    Verify Inlet Water Temperature

Run the kitchen hot water tap until it reaches maximum temperature before starting the dishwasher. The inlet water should be at least 120°F. If inlet water is cold, the sensor may be correctly reporting that water is not reaching temperature.

Professional Repair

When to Call a Technician

Temperature sensor diagnosis requires testing the thermistor resistance at a known temperature reference point. Our technician replaces the failed sensor with a genuine Viking OEM component to restore correct wash cycle operation.

FAQ

Viking Wash Water Temperature Sensor Fault Error Code — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Viking appliance repair answered by our certified technicians.

  • Cleaning performance will be significantly degraded. Without accurate temperature data, the control board cannot ensure water reaches sanitizing temperatures (150°F+), may stall the cycle, or may advance the cycle without adequate heating. Dishes may not be sanitized and cleaning results will be inconsistent.
