Viking Dishwasher Overflow Protection Float Fault
Viking Professional dishwashers are equipped with an overflow protection system in the base pan below the wash tub. When water accumulates in the base pan — from an internal leak, a failed sump seal, or an overfill condition — a float switch in the base pan activates, triggering an automatic shutdown and drain cycle to prevent water from reaching the floor. When the overflow protection triggers, the dishwasher will display an error code (model-dependent), stop the wash cycle, and attempt to drain. The underlying cause of the water accumulation must be identified and repaired before the dishwasher can be returned to service.
What Causes the Overflow Protection / Base Pan Float Fault Error?
A failed sump seal, cracked spray arm, or loose hose connection inside the dishwasher tub is allowing wash water to leak into the base pan.
A deteriorated door gasket allows wash water to spray out the door area during operation, running into the base pan below.
Foam from excessive or incorrect detergent, or a small piece of debris, has lifted the base pan float and is holding it in the triggered position even with no water present.
Basic Steps Before Calling a Technician
-
01Check for Detergent Foam
If the overflow protection triggered immediately after using a new detergent or too much detergent, foam may have lifted the base float. Remove the dishwasher lower kick panel and look for foam or water in the base pan. If foam is present, wait for it to dissipate.
-
02Tilt the Dishwasher
With the dishwasher unplugged, carefully tilt it forward 45 degrees to drain any accumulated water from the base pan. This may clear the float trigger and allow the dishwasher to restart — but the underlying leak source must still be identified.
When to Call a Technician
The base pan overflow protection system protects against water damage to the floor. Once triggered, the leak source must be professionally identified and repaired. Do not continue using the dishwasher until the cause of base pan water accumulation has been resolved.
