Viking Gas Cooktop Thermocouple Fault

Viking Professional gas cooktops use a thermocouple at each burner position as a flame safety device. The thermocouple is a bi-metal temperature sensor that generates a small millivolt signal when heated by the burner flame. This signal holds the gas safety valve open. When the thermocouple fails or degrades, it no longer generates sufficient voltage to hold the valve open, causing the burner flame to extinguish immediately after the ignition button is released — even with a fully lit burner. Thermocouple failure is one of the most common Viking gas cooktop service issues. Each burner position has its own thermocouple, so failure typically affects only one burner at a time.

Root Causes

What Causes the Thermocouple Fault Error?

Thermocouple Tip Degradation

The metal tip of the thermocouple has oxidized or corroded from repeated flame exposure, reducing its thermoelectric output below the minimum required to hold the gas valve open.

Thermocouple Physical Damage

Physical impact (from cleaning or cookware) has bent or cracked the thermocouple sheath, damaging the bi-metal element inside.

Dirty Thermocouple Contact Point

Carbon deposits on the thermocouple tip from high-heat cooking or boilovers reduce the thermocouple's ability to generate sufficient millivoltage.

Troubleshooting Steps

Basic Steps Before Calling a Technician

Safety first: Always disconnect power before inspecting your Cooktop. Do not attempt repairs beyond your skill level.
  1. 01
    Clean the Thermocouple Tip

Allow the affected burner to cool completely. Gently clean the thermocouple tip (the upright metal probe near the burner cap) with fine steel wool or a soft abrasive pad to remove carbon deposits. Reinstall the burner cap and test. A dirty thermocouple sometimes responds to cleaning.

  2. 02
    Hold Ignition Button Longer

Some Viking models require holding the ignition button for 10–15 seconds after the burner lights to allow the thermocouple to heat sufficiently. If holding longer allows the burner to stay lit, the thermocouple is weakening.

FAQ

Viking Thermocouple Fault Error Code — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Viking appliance repair answered by our certified technicians.

  • This is the classic symptom of a failed or weakened thermocouple. The thermocouple generates the millivolt signal that holds the gas valve open after ignition. When it fails, releasing the ignition control removes the only thing keeping the valve open and the burner extinguishes. Thermocouple replacement resolves this in virtually all cases.
