Viking Range F6 Fault Code

F6 on a Viking range or wall oven indicates the door latch position switch has failed to confirm latch status to the ERC. Unlike F5 — which indicates the latch motor circuit failed to complete travel — F6 means the motor may have completed its travel correctly but the position-confirmation switch is not reporting the locked or unlocked state. Self-clean mode cannot start with F6 active, but normal baking and broiling typically remain available.

Root Causes

What Causes the F6 Error?

Failed Latch Position Switch

The microswitch that reports latch position to the ERC has failed internally and cannot provide a confirmation signal in any latch position.

Misaligned Switch Actuator

The physical actuator that triggers the position switch has shifted out of alignment, so the switch is never activated even when the latch bolt is fully engaged.

Corroded Switch Contacts

Grease or moisture contamination of the switch contact surfaces prevents reliable continuity, causing intermittent or absent latch position signals to the ERC.

Troubleshooting Steps

Basic Steps Before Calling a Technician

Safety first: Always disconnect power before inspecting your Range. Do not attempt repairs beyond your skill level.
  1. 01
    Perform a Circuit Breaker Reset

Switch off the range circuit breaker for 60 seconds and restore power. An F6 that clears after reset and does not recur may have been triggered by a transient switch contact issue.

  2. 02
    Test Self-Clean Initiation After Reset

After reset, attempt to initiate a self-clean cycle. If F6 returns immediately on the latch sequence, the latch position switch requires professional replacement.

Professional Repair

When to Call a Technician

F6 codes that return consistently after breaker reset require professional latch position switch diagnosis and replacement with a Viking OEM latch assembly.
