Viking Refrigerator Thermistor Fault

Viking built-in refrigerators use multiple thermistors (negative temperature coefficient resistors) to continuously monitor compartment temperatures and provide feedback to the main control board. Thermistors are located in the fresh food compartment, freezer compartment, and at the evaporator. A failed thermistor sends an incorrect temperature signal to the control board — causing overcooling, undercooling, or a fault indicator on the display panel. Thermistor faults are distinct from defrost thermostat faults. A defrost thermostat controls the defrost cycle; thermistors monitor and report temperatures to the control board continuously.

Viking Refrigerator — Thermistor Fault error code repair
Root Causes

What Causes the Thermistor Fault Error?

Thermistor Element Failure

The thermistor resistance element has degraded or failed, sending an out-of-range signal to the control board — either reading an impossibly high or low temperature.

Thermistor Wiring Connector Fault

The connector between the thermistor and the wiring harness has corroded or come loose, breaking the signal circuit.

Ice or Moisture Contamination

Ice formation around the thermistor probe (common with defrost system faults) can damage the thermistor element or connector over time.

Troubleshooting Steps

Basic Steps Before Calling a Technician

Safety first: Always disconnect power before inspecting your Refrigerator. Do not attempt repairs beyond your skill level.
  1. 01
    Note Any Displayed Error Code

Viking refrigerators may display a specific error code for thermistor faults (such as Err or a temperature-related alarm). Document the exact display for your technician.

  2. 02
    Check Compartment Temperatures

Use a standalone refrigerator thermometer to measure the actual fresh food and freezer temperatures. Compare these to the set points. A large discrepancy between actual and set temperatures with no error display also indicates a thermistor issue.

Professional Repair

When to Call a Technician

Thermistor diagnosis requires testing the sensor resistance with a calibrated multimeter at known temperature reference points. Our technician replaces faulty thermistors with genuine Viking OEM sensors matched to the refrigerator model series.

FAQ

Viking Thermistor Fault Error Code — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Viking appliance repair answered by our certified technicians.

  • Viking built-in refrigerators typically have three or more thermistors: one in the fresh food compartment, one in the freezer compartment, and one at or near the evaporator. Dual-evaporator models may have additional sensors. A technician can identify which thermistor has failed using resistance testing.
