Viking Induction Cooktop Pan Detection Failure
Viking induction cooktops use the induction coil itself to detect the presence of compatible ferromagnetic cookware by monitoring changes in coil inductance. When a compatible pan is placed on an active zone, the control system detects the load change and activates power delivery. When the detection circuit fails — or is perceived to fail — the cooktop may display a no-pan indicator even with compatible cookware on the zone, or may fail to activate zones at all. True pan detection circuit failure (power board sensing failure) is less common than user error with non-compatible cookware. Always verify cookware compatibility first.
What Causes the Pan Detection Failure Error?
Aluminum, copper, glass, or thin stainless steel cookware without a magnetic base will not be detected by the induction coil. This is normal function, not a fault.
Viking induction zones require the cookware to be centered on the zone marking. A pan positioned off-center may not register sufficient inductance change for detection.
The sensing circuit on the induction power board that monitors coil inductance changes has failed, preventing detection of any cookware regardless of compatibility.
Basic Steps Before Calling a Technician
-
01Test with a Different Pan
Test with a cast iron skillet or a pan with a strong magnet stick to the base. If the cooktop detects the cast iron but not your preferred pan, the issue is cookware compatibility.
-
02Ensure Pan Covers Zone Marking
The pan base diameter should match or slightly exceed the zone marking. A very small pan on a large zone may not generate sufficient inductance change for detection.
When to Call a Technician
If the cooktop does not detect any compatible cookware after verifying multiple ferromagnetic pans and power cycling, the induction sensing circuit requires professional diagnosis.

Viking Pan Detection Failure Error Code — Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Viking appliance repair answered by our certified technicians.
-
Viking induction cooktops require cookware with a ferromagnetic base — cast iron, carbon steel, and most stainless steel cookware (test with a magnet: if the magnet sticks firmly, the pan is compatible). Aluminum, copper, glass, and thin non-magnetic stainless steel will not work on induction. Viking recommends using pans with a flat base diameter between 4 and 12 inches for optimal zone detection and heating efficiency.
